Decision Support Systems for China's Agricultural Policy Analysis and Sustainable Development

The overall goal of the research programDecision Support Systems for China’s Agricultural Policy Analysis and Sustainable Development led by Prof. Jukun Huang of CCAP, IGSNRR, is to establish a model-based system for analyzing the impacts of agricultural policies and other exogenous shocks in China and rest of world on China’s food and agricultural production, consumption, trade (or marketing) and farmer’s income at national and regional levels as well as at household level by income group in different regions.

During the last decade, to set up this Decision Support System, the research team has been engaged in two different but closely related research works. First is the methodology researches of the Decision Support System, which included agricultural partial equilibrium models at national and regional levels that link with various households in each region, general equilibrium models at national and regional levels, Global Trade Analysis Project, linking the above economic models with the natural resource analysis models, such as Agricultural Ecological Model, and preparing and updating the databases used by these models. Second is empirical studies on the key issues of China agricultural economy using the decision support making system. Some examples include, but not limited to, the studies on the impacts of China’s agricultural R&D policies, the resource management policies, rural development policies, and agricultural market and trade policies. A series of original findings had being published on international peer reviewed academic journals based on the above studies, and has provided important scientific information for policy makers in China.
