Plenary Session of “Asian Forum on Carbon Update 2011”

March 14th-17th, “Asian Forum on Carbon Update 2011” was organized in Bandung, Indonesia. Dr. JIANG Luguang, associate professor of the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IGSNRR, CAS), was invited to participate in the forum and gave his presentationin the Plenary Session.

Dr. JIANG Luguang gave his presentation with the title “Where Will China's New 40 Million ha Carbon Sequestration Forests be Located?” Firstly, he introduced China’s positive and constructive role in mitigating global climate change. He also introduced the two specific targets on reducing economy’s carbon intensity and increasing forest coverage declared by the Chinese Government in 2009. Then taking the carbon sequestration forest target as a breakthrough point (increasing forest coverage by 40 million hectares by 2020 from the 2005 levels), he presented the latest research results of his team on simulating the potential area for reforestation in China.

Dr. JIANG’s presentation received good feedbacks. Dr. Hari Srinivas from UNEP, chair of the Plenary Session, said that “The presentation from Chinese Academy of Sciences, not only contributes to the planning, decision making and investment of reforestation in China, but also provides a good model for Asian research institutions on how to endeavor to mitigate climate change”.

The forum was co-sponsored by the National Council on Climate Change of Indonesia (DNPI), Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and UNEP REDD+ Programme etc. The forum’s objective is to share the latest progress on mitigating climate change among Asian countries and prepare for the COP17 conference in this year. More than 200 governmental officers and scientists from Asian, American, and European countries participated in the forum.
