Prof. Paul Longley Gives Report on GIS in IGSNRR

Prof. Paul Longley from University College of London gave a report titled “Ten Years of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Science ---Why it is More Important than Ever” in the CAS Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research (IGSNRR) on October 19, 2010.

Based on his new work Geographic Information Systems and Science (Third Edition: 2010), Prof. Longley expounded the concept, potential evolution and pitfalls of GIS which is a set of tools that captures, stores, analyzes, manages, and presents data that are linked to location(s).

He also visited the State Key Laboratory of Resources and Environmental Information System under IGSNRR after the report and conducted an in-depth exchange on GIS with its staff.

Prof. Longley is a co-editor of the international journal Environment and Planning B and a member of five other editorial boards. His publications include 14 books and more than 125 refereed journal articles and contributions to edited collections. He has been awarded over 40 research grants.
