Workshop on “Transboundary Cooperation Project in Koshi River Basin” in Himalaya region holds in Sichuan Province, China
Workshop on Koshi River Cooperation Project was held on the Emei Mountain on August 23-26, 2010 in Sichuan Province. The meeting themes mainly focus on water disasters induced by water, biodiversity, land-use and land-cover change, glacier and glacial lake and socio-economic and poverty in Himalaya region. More than thirty experts and delegates from China and other countries took part in the workshop.
In recent years, the area around Himalaya Mountain becomes one of the zones which are sensitive to global climate change. To discuss the issue and the problems mentioned above, every present expert gave their points of these problems from different aspects in the workshop.
Mr. Dhanbir Yadav, manager of Koshi Basin Office introduced their work in term of hydrology and meteorology in Koshi River Basin. Prof. Narendra Khanal from Tribhuvan University of Nepal and Prof. Chen Ningsheng from IMHE, CAS reported disasters induced by water and water relative hazards, such as glacier lake outburst floods, landslide dam outburst floods, landslides, debris flow and flash floods, floods triggered by infrastructural development and so on, in the Koshi Basin during the past few years, respectively, and then they put forward some advices to these problems and alleviation measures to deal with them. Dr. Arun Shrestha from ICIMOD demonstrated their works on monitoring and anticipating of climate change and its impacts in hydrological regime in Koshi Basin, pointed out the issues and gaps existed in these areas, and put forward some recommendations for the Koshi Basin Initiative.
During the meeting, Prof. Zhang Yili and Mr. Gao Jungang from Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research(IGSNRR) reviewed the trend of vegetation coverage change, and LUCC features in the Koshi River Basin in the past several decades, and exchanged their ideas with other experts about how to carry out the next step work in the future. Prof. Fang Yiping from IMHE, CAS, Ms. Kiran Hunzai, came from ICIMOD, and Dr. Ravi Aryal from WECS gave different speeches from climate change, socio-economic analysis, and management strategic plan, respectively. Ms. Roshani Manadhar from Tribhuvan University of Nepal, Prof. Jiang Jiangping from CIB, CAS and Dr. Nakul Chettri from ICIMOD discussed biodiversity protection, management, and adapting strategy, which had came up with many valuable suggestions.
Dr. Garrett Kilroy, from ICIMOD stated the progress of Kosi Basin Transboundary Project and summarized Ecosystem Services for Poverty Alleviation (ESPA) programme. He also proposed ICIMOD approach for September call for proposals and tasks for proposal preparation.
Representatives from CAS and ICIMOD overviewed work plans in the Koshi river basin, which had been partly adapted based on the previous work, proposed the cooperation plan in the succeeding year and established the long-term cooperation relationship.
