2010 Regional Conference of IGU held in Israel

2010 Regional Conference of International Geographical Union (IGU) was held in Tel Aviv, Israel on July 12-16. The meeting theme focuses on Bridging Diversity in a Globalizing World. More than twenty representatives from Chinese mainland organized by the Geographical Society of China (GSC) took part in the conference, including Prof. ZHOU Chenghu, deputy director of Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research (IGSNRR), Prof. WANG Wuyi, IGSNRR,Chairman of the GSC Committee of IGU and ZHANG Guoyou, secretary-general of GSC.

As one of the world’s earliest and most important academic groups, IGU was established in Brussels in 1922. It is one of the most important academic organizations. Nowadays, it is a key member of International Council of Science (ICSU) and International Social Science Council (ISSC). The first of International Geographical Congresses was found in 1871. Since then there are 31 IGU conferences successfully held.It holds once time every four-year. The IGU Regional Conference opens usually between two IGU, and takes attention to different topicsare focused on, in 1990. “Asia-Pacific region IGU conference” was successfully held in Beijing.  

It was reported that Regional Conference or IGU will open once a year in the future. The 33rd IGU will be held in Beijing in 2016.
