China-Australia Water Resources Research Workshop Held in Beijing

Under the auspices of Ministry of Science and Technology of P.R.C. (MOST PRC), China-Australia Water Resources Workshop was held in Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research (IGSNRR) CAS on 30th May, 2009. The meeting focused mainly on China-Australia Joint Found Projects, and theirs’ research results and research direction in the future.

More than 40 experts represented the meeting, who are from MOST PRC, the Ministry of Water Resources of People’s Republic of China (MWR PRC), International cooperation division of CAS, IGSNRR, Beijing Normal University, China Agricultural University, North China Electric Power University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Research Center for Water Resource of China Academic Sciences, the University of Melbourne and Joint Research Center for Water Resources in Australia.

During the symposium, Liu Changming, academician of CAS, director of committee experts ofResearchCenterfor Water Resources CAS, made a presentation on some problems of water ecology and water environment of typical watershed areas in northChina. Some of them were paid much attention by the experts in the meeting.

In addition, the Australian academician, John Langford and Prof. Xia Jun, IGSNRR, presented respectively bilateral research work, cooperation and communication, study results. Experts fromChinaandAustraliacommunicated that the affects of water resources due to clime change, the problems contrasting of typical watershed areas of China-Australia, water-use efficiency in agriculture and sustainable management of underground water etc.

Afterwards, some items such as the research situation of China-Australia cooperation projects and present problems, cooperation achievements edited and published and practical cooperation in the future were discussed. After the meeting, some experts visited Baiyangdian river basin inNorth China, and discussed further cooperation.
