1st China-Japan Pre-Students Forum on Sustainable Water Resources Use Held in IGSNRR, CAS

On March 21st 2008, the 1st China-Japan Pre-Students Forum on sustainable water resources use was held successfully in Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences. This forum is organized by IGSNRR and 6 Universities in China and University of Tsukuba, for promotion of international cooperation and mutual understanding of life and environmental sciences, and is a tuneup of the 1st forum, which will be held in Japan in October, 2008. Nearly 100 participants from IGSNRR, Graduate University of CAS, Peking University, Tsinghua University, China Agriculture University, China University of Geosciences, Beijing Normal University, and from Graduate School of Life & Environmental Sciences of University of Tsukuba in Japan, attended the forum. 16students (7 Chinese and 9 Japanese) gave presentations on ways to sustainable water resources utilization and comfortable environments for human being. Professors SONG Xianfang(IGSNRR), SHI Minjun(Graduate University of CAS), WEN Donghui and GUO Huaicheng(Peking University), Qing yu(Tsinghua University), DONG Renjie(China Agriculture University), FENG Yunping(China University of Geosciences), CHEN Jin(Beijing Normal University), and professors Masakazu NAGAKI, Tadashi TANAKA, Takehiko FUKUSHIMA, Norio SUGIURA, Jennifer Manyweathers and Maki TSUJIMURA from University of Tsukuba, listened to presentations and gave comments. All the participants of ACCU International Student Exchange Program under the UNESCO-Japan Funds-in-Trust, including 5 Chinese PH.D students or postdoctoral fellows and 14 Japanese students, also joined the forum.

The forum was co-presided by students LIU Xin(IGSNRR) and Masato BABA(University of Tsukuba). Professor YU Guirui, Deputy-director of IGSNRR, and professor NAGAKI gave opening addresses to encourage youths to communicate more in larger domains to make this forum a success. During the forum, Chinese students gave reports mainly on water related issues in China, such as water resources scarcity, sewage treatment, soil vapor transportation in arid and semi-arid region, precipitation infiltration study, virtue water, bio-energy. While the Japanese students mainly focused on biomass utilization, Methane Fermentation, food processing, water-saving techniques in pulp and paper industries, effects of red pine and evergreen oaks trees on soil water balance, remote sensing in monitoring water pollution, reconstruction of bio-diversity, light responses characteristic of Chrysophyte Alga, and the high-CO2 effect on plants. All the participants communicated well in this forum.

At the closing ceremony, professors gave their congratulations to all the young students. Japanese professors welcome Chinese students to come to Japan and attend the 1st forum in October. Chinese professors support students to make further communications, and by comparison of all the presentations, they suggest the Chinese students learn more from the Japanese students and focus on the innovation of studies. The two chairmen expressed their sincere thanks to all the participants for their supports and promised to make more widespread communication and cooperation in the future.

This forum has made a great success not only in promoting deeper scientific communications but also in helping youths to understand each other, which would be very important foundation in strengthening the friendships between the two countries.
