LIU Yi: New director of the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research



Geographer Liu Yi, 51, has been appointed new director of the CAS Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research in Beijing. He is to succeed Prof. LIU Jiyuan, 61, to head the research body with a staff of more than 500 conducting research in such disciplines as geography, natural resources and geo-information sciences.

Graduated in 1983 from the College of Arts and Science, Beijing Union Univesity, Prof. Liu carried out cooperative studies in Australia from 1992 to 1993. Now he serves as a council member of several academic organizations, including China Society for Sustainable Development, China Society on Tibetan Plateau, and China Society for Administrative Division and Toponymy. He also sits on the Special Committee of Economic Geography under the Geographical Society of China. In addition, he is a vice editor-in-chief of two academic journals, "Geographical Research," and "Resources Science." He has hosted more than research projects funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology, CAS, National Natural Science Foundation of China and other governmental departments.
