China-France Rural Construction and Development Meeting Convened in Beijing

The China-France International Symposium on Rural Construction and Development was convened in Beijing, China, from 23 to 24 September 2007, under the auspices of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research (IGSNRR), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). The symposium was co-sponsored by the following organizations: IGSNRR, CAS; Specialty Committee of Rural Geography, Geographical Society of France; and Specialty Committee of Sustainable Agriculture & Rural Geography, Geographical Society of China. The local organizers included: Research Center of Regional Agriculture and Rural Development, IGSNRR, CAS; New Countryside Construction and Planning Center of Capital’s Mountainous Region, Beijing Branch of CAS & Beijing Academy of Science and Technology; and the Project Team of “The New Countryside Construction Patterns and Approach to Sustainable Development in Eastern Coastal Region of China (No.40635029)”, a key project funded by NSFC. The Symposium was exceptionally well organized by Prof. LIU Yansui with his team at IGSNRR. The Symposium was attended by about 100 participants, some 30 or more coming from outside China (mainly are from France).

At this symposium, 7 invitations and 28 oral presentations were delivered. The papers presented at the meeting were selected by the Scientific Committee from about 70 abstracts which had been submitted by the end of August 2007 and included diversified topics concerning rural construction and development as follows: (1) Progress in the theories and research methods on rural development; (2) Rural geography research in France; (3) Progress and prospect of China’s rural geography research; (4) The new countryside construction patterns and approach to sustainable rural development in China.

This Symposium successfully provided a platform for enhancing mutual understanding and exchange between Chinese and French scholars, sharing and promoting new scientific findings from a range of disciplines that advance rural construction and development. The experts from both France and China have carried out full discussion and extensive exchange on the issues of rural construction and development. On the basis of this symposium, a long-term relationship of absolutely sincere cooperation between China-France experts is about to be developed, in order to seek common development in the research field of rural construction and development.

Mostly, the Symposium appeared to be what can be called a resounding success. There was high praise, both presented officially as well as in personal talks and emails to the organizers, during and after the meeting.
