Conference on economic geography convenes in Beijing

Under the joint organization of the CAS Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resources Research (IGSNRR), and the Department of Geography, National University of Singapore (NUS), the Second Global Conference on Economic Geography was held from 25 to 28 June in Beijing.

More than 380 scholars and experts from 36 countries participated in the meeting. As the largest reunion of its kind in the international eco-geographical community, the meeting is regarded as an "event of the decade."

Since its first conference held in 2000 in Singapore, the global economy has experienced tremendous transformations, says the meeting organizers. It is time to discuss and debate current and new research agendas in economic geography. It is also a critical time to continue our rethinking of the relationship between the sub-discipline (within human geography) and the wider social science community.

The opening of the conference was co-chaired by Prof. Susan Hanson, former president of the American Geographic Society, and Prof. LIU Weidong from IGSNRR. After the opening, Prof .Susan Hanson gave a talk on people and place in economic geography: learning from women′s entrepreneurship at a plenary session.

The conference has won support from CAS, National Natural Science Foundation of China. Two fieldtrips were organized to Beijing Economic & Technological Development Areas and and Zhongguancun High- and New-tech Development Areas.
