Prof. Alex de Sherbinin
Alex de Sherbinin is the associate director for science applications at the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) at Columbia University. A geographer whose research interests focus on the human aspects of environmental change at local, national, and global scales. He also serves as deputy manager of the NASA Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC); co-Coordinator of the Population-Environment Research Network (PERN); chair of the CODATA Global Roads Data Development Task Group; and co-author of the bi-annual Environmental Performance Index (EPI). Prior to joining CIESIN, he served as a program officer with the Social Policy Program of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Gland, Switzerland, and a population geographer at the Population Reference Bureau (PRB), Washington, DC. He was also a Peace Corps volunteer in Mauritania, West Africa. He has published more than 80 peer-reviewed papers on Science, Nature Climate Change, Global Environmental Change and other high impact factor journals with a range of topics, including population dynamics and the environment; climate vulnerability mapping; urban climate vulnerability and sustainability; climate change and migration; environmental indicators; and remote sensing applications for environmental treaties. |
