The 14th GIS Academic Forum
Topic:Community- and citizen- remote sensing: Opportunity, Challenges and Case studies
Speaker:Prof. XIAO Xiangming
Time:9:00-11:00am Oct.16, 2012
Venue:Room 2209 of IGSNRR, CAS
Introduction to the speaker:
Dr. Xiao is a professor of ecology at the University of Oklahoma (OU), Norman, Oklahoma, USA. He leads the Earth Observation and Modeling Facility at OU. His research interests are centered on three themes: land use and land cover changes, carbon cycle, and ecology of infectious diseases. He has authored and co-authored 120 papers and book chapters, and serves as subject-matter editor for Ecological Applications, and review editor for EcoHealth.
Brief Introduction to the report:
National space agencies and private companies have been rapidly expanding the Earth observation capacities and provide image data at relatively low cost or free to the public. Over the next few years, number of smartphones in the world will reach 1 billion, and most of them are equipped with GPS and good quality cameras. High speed Internet, cloud storage and computing, and web technology are changing the way how data are stored, shared and analyzed. There are many opportunities and challenges in development of community- and citizen remote sensing over this decade. This lecture will introduce our initial effort in community- and citizen remote sensing, including Global Geo-Referenced Field Photo Library (http://www.eomf.ou.edu/photos/) and large-scale and dynamic mapping of forests in Southeast Asia.
