"Earth System Process and Human Activities" conference was held in Beijing during January 20-22, 2007. As the joint annual meeting of the main GEC national communities in China, this conference aims at enhancing the multidisciplinary collaboration, promoting earth system science reasearch, meanwhile, improving efficiency for the committees with common interests. The meeting has embodied the presentations by famous scientists, as well as the work reports of the committees and their working groups. The chair of the national communities as well as Prof. Hans van Ginkel, Rector of the United Nations University, delivered keynote speeches at the conference. The conference absorbed the involvement of near 300 scientists and scholars, officials, students and journalists.

Besides the scientists in its working groups, 29 CNC-IHDP members and consultative committee members attended the meeting. Prof. Liu Yanhua, CNC-IHDP chair, vice minister of science and techonology was invited and delivered the keynote speech on "HDGEC Research in China Should Serve the National Demand". In this report, Prof . Liu analysed the national demand on HDGEC research in China, including resource and environment risk governance, implementation of the resource-saving and environment-conservation policy, scientific support on environmental diplomacy, balanced urban-rural development, and brought forward corresponding research strategy. He suggested that the priorities be given to urbanization, environmental trade and compensation mechanism, ecosystem recover, regional economy, and HDGEC methodology.

On Feb. 22nd morning, the CNC-IHDP secretariat and working groups reported their work in 2006 to the committee members. The participants discussed the nomination of the successor of Chinese IHDP SC member, the proposal on building IHDP risk governance core project, the application in setting up a Sino-German cooperation center, the cooperation with UNU, the CNC-IHDP workshop, as well as the contribution to IHDP publications.
