Recruitment for International Postdoctoral Research Fellows in 2014 UNEP-IEMP
The Agreement between United Nations Environment Programme and the Chinese Academy of Sciences signed in 2012 guided the International Ecosystem Management Partnership (UNEP-IEMP) to transfer itself from an international programme to a global centre in the field of ecosystem management. It is the first UNEP initiative of such kind in the South and for the South mobilizing science to support policy setting for sustainable ecosystem management in developing countries. The UNEP-IEMP has successfully accomplished its inception phase from 2010 to 2012 which has laid a solid foundation for its development phase (2013-2015) to become a fully functional global center.
UNEP-IEMP is the first trial for UNEP to collaborate with a developing country in such a substantial way to mobilize both financial and human resources to support its programmes in the rest of the developing world. It is also the first time that China hosts such a global centre in its territory.
UNEP-IEMP, since its official launch in 2011 has been very successful in achieving its expected accomplishments. In supporting Rio+20 efforts and its follow up activities, UNEP-IEMP has successfully organized two high level fora on ecosystem management and green economy engaging officials from governments, scientists, business leaders, and representatives from international and UN organizations. In addition, a total of eight policy papers have been completed to equip decision-makers with essential information for wise decisions on management of ecosystems. Under the 2011-2013 work-plan, UNEP-IEMP has been able to successfully mobilize essential funding totally USD15million for project activities, including USD5million from GEF-SCCF with co-financing of another USD5million from NDRC, to support UNEP’s Ecosystem-Based Adaptation Flagship Programme in Africa and Asia-Pacific with Mauritania, Nepal, and Seychelles as pilot countries. Through partnering with the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA), and financial support from the NFSC and CAS, UNEP-IEMP has set-up the first forest monitoring and research station in Rwanda to support its national programme on ecosystem conservation and restoration. In recognizing the importance of team development for effective implementation of its core activities, UNEP-IEMP has made significant progress to increasing its team. UNEP-IEMP currently has a team of approximately 25 people, composed of part-time and full-time staff on various contractual statuses drawing expertise from and taking advantage of various international staffing programmes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
With its three expected accomplishments of Capacity Building and Technology Transfer, Making the Case through assessment and demonstration, and Enhancing Science Policy Interface, UNEP-IEMP aims to become an international think tank, a technology and knowledge hub, and a centre for capacity building on ecosystem management for developing countries.
