Advanced Training Workshop on Ecosystem--based Adaptation in Arid Areas Concluded Successfully

An advanced training workshop on ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) in arid areas was successfully held in Beijing from 10 to 21 October 2016 as National Development and Reform Commission of China (NDRC) launched a series of training workshops for developing countries to implement the capacity building initiatives announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping during 21st Conference of Parties (COP 21) in Paris last year and to promote South-South Cooperation on Climate Change.

The advanced training workshop was sponsored by NDRC and organized by Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research (IGSNRR), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) with technical support of UNEP International Ecosystem Management Partnership (UNEP-IEMP) and Chinese Ecosystem Research Network (CERN). Twenty-five participants from 14 developing countries including Benin, Vietnam, Cameroon, India, Pakistan, Egypt, Kenya, Niger, Seychelles, Senegal, Zambia, Mongolia, Iran and Russia attended the training workshop.

The workshop focused on long-term monitoring in arid and semi-arid ecosystem, resilience to climate change and frangibility evaluation and cartographic technique. The operational organizer, Prof. YU Xiubo, CERN Secretary General highlighted the significance of international collaboration on long-term ecosystem monitoring and management and the resilience to climate change. Prof. YU and Prof. LIU Jian, Director of UNEP-IEMP, delivered speeches on ‘Ecosystem Monitoring and Management: Learned from Chinese Ecosystem Research Network (CERN)’ and ‘Flagship Programme: Climate, Ecosystem and Livelihoods’.

Scientists from CERN centers and ecological sites as well as other CAS institutes gave lectures on the various topics relating to Ecosystem management and policy support in arid areas,

Data management and sharing, Soil and water conservation, Resilience to climate change,Desertification control in Northwestern China and Application of
 remote sensing and Geo-information Sciences. In addition, the learners made group discussions and shared their experience.

In the final evaluation of training, Prof. LIU awarded the certificates issued by NDRC to participants.
