The Kick-off Meeting of Project on "Impacts of Climate Change on Socio-economic System and Adaptive Strategy" Holds in Beijing

On February 16, 2012, the kick-off meeting on national key research project on "Impacts of Climate Change on Socio-economic System and Adaptive Strategy" was held in Beijing. The Center for Chinese Agricultural Policy (CCAP), Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research (IGSNRR), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) lead this project. CCAP, IGSNRR and the other four institutions, including the State Information Center of National Development and Reform Commission, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing Normal University, and the Institute of Policy and Management of CAS, will implement this project in 2012-2016.

Prof. HUANG Jikun, director and professor of CCAP as well as professor of IGSNRR, is appointed as a chief scientist of the project. During the meeting, he gave a brief introduction of this project. The overall goals of this project are to identify the pathway and mechanism of impacts and adaptation of climate change on China’s socio-economic system, explore the major theories and methodologies of climate change economics, establish the comprehensive simulation system of the impacts of climate change on socio-economic system, and quantitatively analyze the impacts of climate change on China’s socio-economic system under different scenarios related to climate change and adaptation measures, and propose adaptation mechanism and national strategic plans to mitigate the impacts of climate change on socio-economic system in China.

Experts presented at the meeting extended warm congratulations on the kick-off of the project. The project advisors, Academician XU Guanhua (former minister of the Ministry Science and Technology. MOST), Academican QIN Dahe (former minister of China Meteorological Administration), Prof. LIU Yanhua (former vice-minister of MOST), the head of Project Expert’s Group (PEG) Academician FU Bojie, and members of PEG as well as other experts spoke at the meeting.
