The Institute has successfully designed a 1000Mb local area network (LAN) with the aim to build up a network computation and data exchange platform, to promote and provide scientific research information services, and to create a network-based office environment. The network is working well with nearly 2800 network nodes and is operating at 100Mb information transmission rate.
The network computation platform, centralized with a SUN6800 super server, will be of great help for numeric simulation and GIS data processing. It enables research units to exchange data at high speed, and allows researchers to share information worldwide via the Internet.
The GIS software such as Arc/Info and Super Map 2000 can run completely via the intranet. Resource sharing of computer hardware and software in the Institute is now a reality. The website for information promotion and promulgation in the Institute is still improving and the intranet has become an important platform for releasing official information and strengthening communication. The construction of the Management Information System (MIS) of the Institute is underway.
