Prof. Chen Shupeng - doyen of China’s Mapping and GIS Program.　Prof. Chen has long engaged in research in mapping sciences, notably geographic, aerial and automatic mapping.　He pioneered remote sensing application in China, and organized studies on the Geographic Information System.　He has contributed greatly to the development of geo-information science, digital Earth studies, and to the exploration of the new concept and method of “geo-informatics”.　In 1980, he was elected as academician of CAS.
